The problem with role models is they teach you roles.
It’s funny: when people always talk about the importance of role models, I used to think that was so exaggerated, but as I get older, I start to realize I don’t feel that way so much anymore. If you see somebody like you who’s doing something, an older version of what you are, it does make you feel like it’s more possible.
To change bad habits, we must study the habits of successful role models.
I would tell kids not be like me, but to try and be better than me. Because I always wanted to be better than everyone I was around. That’s what drove me. I wanted to be better than my role models. I’m super competitive.
Some of the most important people in my life would be shocked to learn that they were role models. They weren’t celebrities, or even particularly accomplished. But they had some quality that I admired, that made me want to be like them.
