Sometimes I feel like the best role models and the people you should look up to most are the people who make mistakes because they show you how to overcome them and walk through that mistake with integrity and grace.
Some of the most important people in my life would be shocked to learn that they were role models. They weren’t celebrities, or even particularly accomplished. But they had some quality that I admired, that made me want to be like them.
Typically, when you look for role models, you want someone who has your interests and came from the same background. Well, look how restricting that is. What people should do is take role models a la carte. If there’s someone whose character you appreciated, you respect that trait.
Role models are only of limited use. For no-one is as important, potentially powerful and as key in your life and world as you.
I have so many different role models who have taught me so many different things at so many different points in my life, it doesn’t feel like I have one person that I have to live up to.
The problem with role models is they teach you roles.
To change bad habits we must study the habits of successful role models.
Of all the rocks upon which we build our lives, we are reminded today that family is the most important. And we are called to recognize and honor how critical every father is to that foundation.
