To be given the opportunity to help shape new artists’ careers and mentor them to see their dreams come to fruition is a task I welcome with open arms.

I caught the mentorship bug when I was Miss California U.S.A. and volunteered to mentor for a brand new program called ‘Who’s Your Hero.’ I literally fell in love with the impact it all has, not only on the girls but on myself – giving back is such a powerful thing.
Think for yourself. Unplug yourself from follow-the-follower groupthink, and virtually ignore what everyone else in your industry is saying (except the ones everyone agrees is crazy). Do your own research, draw your own conclusions, set your own course, and stick to your guns. When you’re just starting out, people will tell you you’re wrong. After you’ve blown past them, they’ll tell you you’re crazy. A few years after that, they’ll (privately) ask you to mentor them.

She would be a mentor and an inspiration to girls like herself, the quiet ones who’d sleepwalked their way through high school, knowing nothing except that they couldn’t possibly be happy with any of the choices the world seemed to be offering them.
There were mistakes that I made that I did learn from. When you don’t have responsibilities, the only responsibility is for yourself, but when you have someone there to mentor you, then you don’t make stupid mistakes.

Even Jay Z and Sean ‘Puffy’ Combs, who’s a mentor and also gave me a shot when I was an independent artist in Atlanta. He came to my show, and he said, ‘I just want people to know about you.’
I firmly believe in the old adage ‘Actions speak louder than words.’ This means proactively seeking women for roles within boards, identifying opportunities for diversity within teams, and finding ways to use your platform to mentor women – and then encourage them to do the same.
I do have a very wonderful mentor, who helps me and reads my work and criticizes me, all the time. You’ve gotta have those people, who will tell you the truth and help you. You don’t want anyone buttering you up. I want someone to tell me what I can fix. That’s what I like.

My father is a marvelous mentor, and if you’re going to have a mentor, the ones that work best let you make your own mistakes. You’re ready to do your own thing and just at that moment of being unbridled, if somebody’s trying to manage you too tightly, it’s going to be tough – particularly if that person’s got the same last name.
