We’re our kids’ first and best role models. So the first question is, what are you as a mom or a dad doing every day, or every week, to start getting into the good habits?
People need role models, and they need to feel that there’s this opportunity to learn. They need to have people that will stick up for them. I want to be a part of that.
I’m not sure we’re presenting ourselves as real role models. I don’t think literature has ever been a real place for role models.
Maybe I’ve had a sheltered life and career, but I have so many role models to look up to. It’s normal that I would strive to build my own career.
I realised there were no good role models for kids. Popeye eats spinach, but also smokes and hits people.
I come from a family of strong women, who have been positive role models for me.
I don’t believe professional athletes should be role models. I believe parents should be role models…. It’s not like it was when I was growing up. My mom and my grandmother told me how it was going to be. If I didn’t like it, they said, Don’t let the door hit you in the ass on your way out. Parents have to take better control.
At Camfed, we have focused on transforming the vicious cycle of poverty in many rural African communities into a cycle of opportunity. Alumnae of Camfed’s programs go on to become role models and mentors for future generations of young students. We call this the ‘virtuous circle,’ and we know this is a model that works.
I didn’t have a ton of role models back in 1998. So, when I was looking to get in, it was really just looking up at all the men who were out there. When you’re not seeing women – when you’re breaking into anything – it’s like, ‘Well, this is what the men do and how they act, so we’re going to just emulate that behavior.’
I love the fact that they [girls ]are into Superman and Green Lantern and Batman and everything, and they really do have all those toys as well, but I don’t want all their role models to be men.
I don’t think anyone would say that the women on the United States national team are not great role models and ambassadors. Everywhere we go, we connect with fans, sign autographs, and represent our sport and federation with class.
The men and women who serve in the armed forces are great role models.
People need role models. They need to see examples of people in peoples’ lives.
The culture in which you parent, mentor, or educate boys exhorts them to be individualistic and group-oriented at once, but does not give them a tribal structure in which to accomplish both in balance. It used to be that the tribe formed a boy’s character while the peer group existed primarily to test and befriend that character. Nowadays, boys’ characters are often formed in the peer group. Mentors and intimate role models rarely exist to show the growing boy in any long-term and consistent way how both to serve a group and flourish as an independent self.
I think role models also start in the home with your parents.
Don’t believe in role models, but if I do, then I’m mine.
I wish HP nothing but the best. I think HP is an icon. Those of us who had their careers in the Valley think of Dave Packard and Bill Hewlett as role models. We would love to be half as good as they were.
We lack role models who can inspire our young people to make change.
I would tell kids not be like me, but to try and be better than me. Because I always wanted to be better than everyone I was around. That’s what drove me. I wanted to be better than my role models. I’m super competitive.
There’s a lot of skaters that I look up to, and I think my biggest skating role models were the two Russian competitors at the 2002 Olympic games in Salt Lake City. They really motivated me to follow my passion in skating, and it really blossomed from there.
When it comes to role models, as a person of faith, I think we all have one perfect role model. And when I’m asked that question, I point to God and to my faith. And that’s where I tell my kids to look.
My mom is incredibly stylish, and she gets it from my grandmother. I feel like I can’t live up to how chic they are as women. They are great role models for aging gracefully, and that’s a thing that is very key that I try to always emulate.
The hustlers on the corner were my role models.
I just feel like people need role models, you know, that are dressed.
Search for role models you can look up to and people who take an interest in your career. But here’s an important warning: you don’t have to have mentors who look like you. Had I been waiting for a black, female Soviet specialist mentor, I would still be waiting. Most of my mentors have been old white men, because they were the ones who dominated my field.
