We surround ourselves with what is better or see other people as role models. You go, ‘If they can do this, so can I.’ That starts to trigger people, as well.
The American people don’t believe politicians. They don’t believe business leaders or Hollywood celebrities or athletes or other supposed role models. And they certainly don’t believe the news media.
We lack role models who can inspire our young people to make change.
A lot of people tend to glorify the role of satire and comedians. They put them up as role models, as fighters for the truth and against tyranny, and I think that’s overrated.
Michael and I had great role models. Though his father has passed away, his parents had an amazingly strong marriage, as do mine. Both weathered really tough times. For us it has been normal to stay together through difficulties. We grew up witnessing that firsthand.
One thing that I’ve learned from male role models is that they don’t hesitate to invest in themselves, with the view that, if I’m healthy and happy, I’m going to be a better support to my spouse and children. And I’ve found that to be the case: Once my kids were settled, the next thing I did was take care of my own health and sanity. And made sure that I was exercising and felt good about myself. I’d bring that energy to everything else that I did, the career, relationship, on and on and on.
I had no role models from my own community – there was no such thing. Earlier on, there were people like Dolores Del Rio, but I was too young for that – that was before me. There was really nobody out there.
The world needs role models, instead of critics.
I feel like role models today are not meant to be put on a pedestal. But more like angels with broken wings.
I mean there’s still also an element of the audience looking for role models. In my day, when I started, if you were an action hero, you were a little bit of a role model like the person.
I grew up watching cinema in my country that wasn’t telling stories about us, and we had to find a way to connect, and our references, our role models had nothing to do with us. And I’m so glad that it’s changing.
Playing a Disney princess is the most amazing, unbelievable thing and on the other, it’s completely terrifying. I would say it’s a cocktail of every sort of emotion. Princesses are great role models, they teach you about grief loss and have big hearts.
Hey, our Founding Fathers wore long hair and powdered wigs – I don’t see anybody trying to look like them today, either… But we do look to them as role models.
Aging is not ‘lost youth,’ but a new stage of opportunity and strength. It’s a different stage of life, and if you are going to pretend it’s youth, you are going to miss it. You are going to miss the surprises, the possibilities, and the evolution that we are just beginning to know about because there are no role models, no guideposts, and no signs.
I don’t want to have to think about what is right; I want to live right. And what that means to me is going to be different to some of my fans, some of their parents, and some other role models.
Having my foundation be from two positive black role models in my life, my mom and my dad, two strong-minded intelligent individuals who clearly have made a great deal of great decisions in their lives and put me in a position, via educational institutions, to be around other intelligent people and to have a strong moral foundation, from which I try to never stray far. It all spurred me to carve out my own little niche as a human being.
There aren’t that many female role models in science. There are a couple of women, but mostly you’ve got Neil deGrasse Tyson, Richard Dawkins, Lawrence Krauss – they’re all guys. Bill Nye the Science Guy. I love that guy, but it’s all guys.
When I was young, I was looking for people to look up to – role models I could respect.
I don’t think that there are many, many strong, black male role models who provide a certain kind of really American, Southern-based comfort that Madea grows out of. She’s a signpost in our Obama world of traditional Christian values.
There’s room for role models who make mistakes.
This is really funny, but we did a study of the occupations of female characters on TV, and there are so many female forensic scientists on TV because of all the CSI shows and Bones and whatever. I don’t have to lobby anybody to add more female forensic scientists as role models. There’s plenty. In real life, the people going into that field now are something like two-thirds women.
My mother taught me to focus on being myself and not to worry what other people think about you. I know that as long as I’m a good person I’ll stay on the right path. From my dad I learned that when someone tells you ‘No’ it’s only the beginning of a conversation. They both have always let me know that I can do anything I want to do as long as I don’t give up. They are the most important role models in my life because they are exactly who I want to be when I grow up. They are supportive and understanding and I try every day to remember what they’ve taught me.
I get letters from kids from all over the country. I always try to answer them because there were people I looked up to in my youth and just wanted to be in contact with. It’s also important to realize that you find your role models in a lot of different places. I’ve never believed that your role models have to look like you. You can find them in all sort of colors, shapes and sizes.
I was always casting about for role models as a kid and the Star Trek was always available via reruns and also full of possibilities. I wanted to be like Spock because he was unflappable. I wanted to be like Kirk because he had magnetism and the ladies loved him. Bones was a grouch but he was sympathetic. The show worked like a boy band in that way… it had characters who embodied different psychic or emotional positions and that allowed me to see a great range of things.
My role models are Bettie Page and Mia Kirshner. Every day when Mia comes to work she raises the bar for us all.
