Every kid comes to a point in his life, where you listen to your Dad, but then you go into the street and you start listening to the views of other people. You’re looking for role models. It’s like that moment when you step out.

Having my foundation be from two positive black role models in my life, my mom and my dad, two strong-minded intelligent individuals who clearly have made a great deal of great decisions in their lives and put me in a position, via educational institutions, to be around other intelligent people and to have a strong moral foundation, from which I try to never stray far. It all spurred me to carve out my own little niche as a human being.

They’re not role models. So for me it was a bad decision, because of my fans and because of what I stand for.
The only pressure comes form myself. I put pressure on myself at first just because I was intimidated. When I made Amy Poehler laugh, it was a big thing for me. She’s been one of my role models since high school, because she started UCB, which is what I wanted to do since high school.
You know, I’ve never believed, in anything, that you had to have role models who looked like you to do something. If I’d been waiting for a black, female, soviet specialist role model, I’d be still waiting.
Role models are fine. Roll models are better. Anyone who can do a forward roll is pretty awesome in my book.
Young women can be particularly hampered by a lack of female teachers, since they may not feel as comfortable in classes taught by men. And as more girls see educated women who are prominent in their careers and communities, the more positive role models there are for them to emulate.

Someone said to me that we have to encourage more young women to want top-level editing jobs.
