I have been watching how Indian women are forced to do certain things, as the stories of sacrifice and devotion in mythology demand from them. And then there are inspiring stories about women like the Rani of Jhansi that offer women refreshing role models.
Our camps and workshops offer a space where girls of color can learn computer science and coding principles alongside their peers, with mentorship from female role models who have established themselves in tech fields where women, and minority women in particular, tend to be underrepresented.
I wouldn’t say there’s a need for the Spice Girls, but I’d say there’s a place for the Spice Girls. There’s certainly a place for them, but you don’t promote the Spice Girls at the expense of promoting what I think are good role models for girls. You need to create some kind of equality.
I talk about role models a lot and wanting to be a role model for kids around me because I didn’t have that growing up.
I don’t have role models or watch much TV. I go to awards ceremonies but often I don’t even know who the people are. I think that’s good, because then you don’t have preconceived ideas about them.
We are all role models to someone in this world, and we can all have an impact – for good.
My mom is incredibly stylish, and she gets it from my grandmother. I feel like I can’t live up to how chic they are as women. They are great role models for aging gracefully, and that’s a thing that is very key that I try to always emulate.
I always get role models, people from real life who’ve lived the lives of the characters, and talk it through together, me, them and the actor, a lot. That helps. We certainly have our disagreements. But in the end we trust each other.

But if you look outside the window it’s 52-percent female, and something odd is going on there. So I do think it’s your responsibility as a writer, really, to create stuff that little girls can get into too. I want my daughters to have role models that are female.

The most important role models in people’s lives, it seems, aren’t superstars or household names. They’re ‘everyday’ people who quietly set examples for you-coaches, teachers, parents. People about whom you say to yourself, perhaps not even consciously, ‘I want to be like that.’
I see the root of the education crisis in the primary and secondary schools. Academia is doing a fairly good job. The root of the problem is the teachers. Some are great. But too many of them are not capable of being good role models. They can’t control the classes. They lose too much time trying to create a learning environment.
My role models are people who can do things; I say to myself, ‘I wish I could do that.’ Like women who endure hardships and turn their luck around and bring up children on their own and start a business.
