I used read about Dr. King a lot as a kid. Independently, from being assigned it or being told by my parents or anything, I was just really excited about him. So I just started reading about him very young and was inspired by his legacy and looked to him as a role model.
Oprah played a big role in my understanding of what it meant to be female and to really step into your own power. I wouldn’t even call her a role model; she was literally a reference point. You have the dictionary, you have the Bible, you have Oprah.
I definitely want to be an inspiration or a role model for all the little girls out there or anyone out there that wants to break stereotypes. I feel like I’m breaking stereotypes with what I’m doing. I’m not the typical fighter, and there’s a lot of people out there that won’t do something just because they don’t fit the stereotype.
I have lived with extraordinary women, whether it was my grandmother, my mother. My father passed away when I was 16… I was witness to a woman who single handedly brought up the entire family and managed to do everything… She was an extraordinary role model for me.
Anybody can be a role model, anybody can.

We talk a lot about Malcom X and Martin Luther King JR, but it’s time to be like them, as strong as them. They were mortal men like us and everyone of us can be like them. I don’t want to be a role model. I just want to be someone who says, this is who I am, this is what I do. I say what’s on my mind.

Your willingness to apologize can be contagious and models maturity for your partner. Also, your non-apologizing partner may use a nonverbal way to reconnect after a fight, defuse the tension, or show you he’s in a new place and wants to repair a disconnection. Accept the olive branch however it’s offered.
If you say something that is a little unsafe to say but you feel strongly and passionate about it, a lot of people can attack you and call you a bad role model just because they don’t agree with your views, but in reality we’re all different and we’re all unique in our own way and we all have different thoughts.

To me, my Dad’s the greatest guy – next to Jesus Christ – who ever walked this planet. He’s been that outstanding male role model in my life. And he’s still the same guy I grew up around, very conscious of the image he sets forth. As he would say, ‘Wouldn’t do anything behind your back that I wouldn’t do to your face.’
