In 1996, the late, great New York Times columnist William Safire published a column, ‘Blizzard of lies,’ in which he laid out a series of falsehoods by Hillary Rodham Clinton and declared ‘Americans of all political persuasions are coming to the sad realization that our First Lady – a woman of undoubted talents who was a role model for many in her generation – is a congenital liar.’
I don’t seek validation outside, not even with the audience. Today they like me, but tomorrow they may hate me. I don’t want to be anybody’s role model.
So when it comes to being a role model to women, I think it’s because of the way that I feel about myself, and the way that I treat myself. I am a woman, I treat myself with respect and I love myself, and I think that if I’m holding myself to a certain esteem and keeping it real with myself, then that’s going to translate to people like me.
Being that I was raised in the Catholic faith, I am very careful about what I choose. I’ve turned down a lot of projects that… could have helped me a lot financially, and I’ve quit shows because of where they were going and because I feel like I have to be a role model for my kids.
Playing Unique hasn’t changed how I feel about myself, but it has changed how I hold myself. Unique is so confident that I found myself [saying],’You need to be the role model that your character intends you to be.’
I’m not a role model. I’m a role villain.
